Someone came up to me the other day and asked “Brittanie, what’s the difference in a Full-Day offshore charter and a 12- Hour Gulf Stream Charter?” and to be completely transparent with you all, I have had that question a million times so I’ve decided to take a moment and create a list of the two terms and explain what give Hunt Horizon and our Partnerships the edge amongst our competitors.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that the terms “12-hour Gulf Stream fishing charter” and “full-day offshore fishing charter” are often used interchangeably, but they CAN and many times DO differ depending on the charter operator and boat captains. Here’s a breakdown of what typically sets them apart, and what sets our captains apart from others.
12-Hour Gulf Stream Fishing Charter

- Target Area: Deep waters of the Gulf Stream, typically 50–70+ miles offshore.
- Target Species: Mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, billfish (like sailfish, marlin), etc.
- Time Commitment: Around 12 hours dock-to-dock.
- Depth & Distance: Fishing in blue water where pelagic (migratory) fish roam.
- Focus: Usually emphasizes trolling and chasing big game fish in warm currents.
- Price: Tends to be more expensive due to distance, fuel costs, and targeted species.
Full-Day Offshore Fishing Charter

- Duration: Typically, 8 to 10 hours (but varies by captain).
- Distance: Can range 15–40 miles offshore, depending on location and fish.
- Species: May target snapper, grouper, amberjack, kingfish, and sometimes mahi or wahoo.
- Depth: Usually in reef or bottom-fishing zones (200–300 ft depth or less).
- Techniques: Mix of bottom fishing, trolling, or jigging.
- Less travel time than Gulf Stream trips, meaning more time fishing if you’re not going too far out.
Key Difference:
- A 12-hour Gulf Stream trip is more specialized and farther offshore, focusing on big pelagic species.
- A full-day offshore trip is typically shorter and closer, often focusing on reef and bottom species but still offshore.
If you’re after blue water action and trophy fish, go for the Gulf Stream.
If you want solid action with a mix of species and maybe less rough water, a Full-Day offshore is a solid bet
